• Among the Gedolei Torah and Chassidus who illuminated Europe prior to the terrible Holocaust, the extraordinary figure of the Gaon and Chassid, Harav Menachem Zemba , zt”l, Hy”d, of Praga, Warsaw, stood out prominently. Born in 5644, Harav Zemba was tragically orphaned at a young age. He was raised in the home of his grandfather, a tremendous talmid chacham and one of the foremost talmidim of the Chiddushei HaRim of Gur, zy”a. Blessed with phenomenal abilities and boundless hasmadah, he grew into a towering Gaon. Alongside his Torah genius, he devoted himself tirelessly to tzorchei tzibbur. He was a highly active member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisroel and served as one of its primary spokesmen. He was an ardent, devoted Chassid of the Gerrer Rebbe, the Imrei Emes, zy”a, and served as a shining exemplar of Anovo and chassidus. In the years immediately preceding the Holocaust, he was appointed to the Warsaw Vaad HaRabbanim, becoming a central address for Polish Jewry. He maintained close ties with the Gedolei Hador across Lita, Galicia, and Eretz Yisroel. Harav Zemba was an exceptionally prolific mechadesh, leaving behind dozens of volumes of manuscripts. During his lifetime, he published the sefer Zera Avrohom, containing a profound Torah correspondence with the young Illuy, Harav Avraham Luftbir, zt”l, as well as the kuntres Totzaos Chaim, printed in memory of his father in law. During the dark years of the Holocaust, he was confined to the Warsaw Ghetto, where he continued to serve as a pillar of strength and a guiding light for all matters. On Shabbos Kodesh, 18 Nissan 5703, at the outbreak of the Ghetto Uprising, Harav Zemba was tragically murdered by a German sniper. HY"D He was temporarily interred in the courtyard where he fell. Years later, in Sivan 5718, his aron was brought to Eretz Yisroel, and he was laid to his final rest on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.
